PostSubject: Michael Green Chamelions. Need help   Michael Green Chamelions. Need help Icon_minitimeSun Aug 23, 2015 3:34 pm

I picked up a pair of michael green chameleon speakers at an auction for 1000 at an auction. Unfortunately they came damaged from delivery.
Not sure if the drivers work and the truth is I'm not even sure how to hook it up to the crossovers. Looks like the cables have bee cut.
Any help would be appreciated.  Not sure how to add pics.

Hi Cosmic

Here's what we have, Heritage Chameleons (95-96)

These were the first Chameleon models made after the slanted style. They are also the first models I hand voiced for performance, instead of the ones made in the piano shop. They use ScanSpeak drivers, TaraLab wire and my own Caps. The resisters are Dale and the inductors Solen. The wood is a special particle/light MDF no longer made to this spec (that I know of) from Canada, as well the construction was done in Hamilton Ontario. The seams are cherry as well the base.

This particular model has top tuning as well as side and bottom. The Tuning Bars are Aluminum with Brass Tuning Bolts. Looks like you also have some MTD cones.

A wonderful speaker that can rivel and did any $15,000-25,000.00 speaker on the market.

If your going to restore them the first thing you will need to do is find someone who knows cross-overs and is a tech. Do not have them remove and separate the parts without making a sheet. There are no spec records for these, only what you see. The specs were stolen in Nashville. No problem though for a tech to do a beginning to end trace. The binding post are for the amps marked positive and negative. The bundled wires (I think that model had a count of 7) went to the woofer (again follow the trace) and the single went to the tweeter. If you need to replace the wire let me recommend my Type 2 for the woofer and Type 1 for the tweeter. When you pull the drivers out it will be easy to see what went to what. Your going to need to have every part checked to see if they are working correctly.

the cabinets wow

Your going to have to find someone who knows how to repair loose chip wood, which is not easy. When I have done it I mix my own wood filler, your wood shop will know what to use. Make sure they predrill any new holes or that wood will flake. I can give them drilling instructions when the time comes if it helps.

Well my friend you have quite the project. Good news is, when they are done you will have some real handcrafted MG gems. No doubt these speakers sat in my private tunable listening room at one time.

Cool

I do plan on restoring them like you said  once I pulled out the woofer in the treater you kind of do you see where everything goes. I'll do some research tomorrow and see who in LA can go through the drivers in the speakers for me as far as the wire are concerned where would I pick those up?

Good start!

You'll want to get in touch with Harold when you figure out the lengths.

harold@michaelgreenaudio.com

Harold will be leaving for a trip in a couple of days so if he doesn't get a chance to get back right away, he will when he gets through a few meetings. When you email Harold you can CC me and I'll stay in the loop.

Will be nice to see the Chameleons up and smiling again. You'll have to take me some pictures when they are done.

What amps do you have to play them?

also just a note

With the dust cover on the tweeters and the surround on the woofers, to remove smugges, all I do is barely wet my finger and gently rub the material, not hard just barely and the coating on the units will smooth out and the dust will come off.

Thanks so much I will definitely keep you in the loop, and good tip on the dust. Right now my main setup is a Mcintosh 240 with a Mcintosh C28 pre amp Micro Seiki BL91 turntable and I'm using KEF LS50 speakers.

Greetings Cosmicvinyl cheers

Welcome to Tuneland -- from another analog fan!

The KEF's sound nice and coherent with their concentric driver and you got a real treasure with the Chameleons. Congrats.

You must be the only member of Tuneland/Techno-Zone with no CD player in sight Very Happy

A BL-91! Is that an SME? What's the cartridge(s) you run?

@Sonicbeaver
It is an SME 3009 with an ortofon Black.
As far as the CD player  I do have a whole new set up that I will be using I just haven't gotten around to hooking it up yet I found new old stock of Pioneer elite. . The CD player is the PD-75  but I'm really excited for the turntable it's a PL – 90
i'm going out of town this week so I probably set it all up early next week

Hi Cosmicvinyl

Ortofon Black -- that will be the 2M Black?

Excellent! You got one of the best MM cartridges in the world, especially now that the Shure V15 III and IV are no longer made.

Sonic uses an Ortofon 2M Blue and it is the best buy I ever made in cartridges. The Black is something I am contemplating when the stylus is up for changing, which is within this year.

How is the 2M Black with record imperfections, ticks and pops?

Some cartridges make a listen grit their teeth and dread the next tick/pop.

As Sonic collects records, I could end up with great musick on records that are less than perfect or been played on lesser equipment, like I got one Archiv LP of recorder works by Telemann and there is scratch across one of the tracks and you can imagine the contrast of a scratch on the soft music of a recorder. I just have to listen through the click.

The 2M Blue and RIAA stage with the excellent PSVane tubes, which models the sound of Mullards I am told, is very kind to record noises and imperfections.

Hi Michael and Cosmicvinyl

Sad it is. The V15 is gone from the Shure range. This once-venerable company is making phono cartridges for DJs and for the mid-band of the market. Their top of the line is the M95xE -- a good cartridge, very smooth but a little lifeless sounding. In Sonic's system the Ortofon 2M Blue is over the moon better.

The rest of the Shure range is M44s but there is the M78S, a cartridge that has a tip for 78 rpms and SPs.

Sonic had one but there were QC problems -- I tightened the mounting screws just slightly tight in my Audio Technica AT 120 LP and the cartridge went silent. Also, the stylus tip was a little narrow for 78s than Sonic would like -- it might ride too deeply in grooves and play all the crackles even though my 78s are thoroughly deep cleaned (for sure, you need a range of tip sizes for 78s but Stanton 500 has an average size that works for enough labels). So Sonic has been using Stanton for 78s and SPs.

See the Shure range of cartridges here: http://www.shure.com/americas/products/phono
