| Hi guys
I started a thread on Stereophile about Cryo-freezing as well as dynamic range testing http://www.stereophile.com/content/freeze-those-babies#comment-540470 . If it gets too unruley up there I'll continue it here.
I know some of you are concerned about the practices of May and Geoff but I will try to keep my views in those matters separated from my testing.
all about the music
I also want to thank Toledo for all his great posting on the "phile".

| I'm glad I'm doing these tests outside of Geoff Kaits domain, as he tends to make things cloudy. I've seen this happen a lot when people who are pushing something and are not truly referencing what they are doing in practice and often. But in all fairness to the cause here is their main testing thread http://www.stereophile.com/content/dynamics-and-dynamic-range I decided to move to do my own thing when their side started to get too shakey in their approaches. Notice how Geoff doesn't want me testing his stuff, this speaks volumes to me, and is good enough reason for me to do things independently and fairly. here is their test system This is not Geoff's as Geoff does not have a system in a room setting. I know scary isn't it? He does all his work with headphones only. I would be interested to hear the opinions of the tunees on this test system setup. | |

| Don't cryo your CD's just yet folks You might not like what it's doing and so far we as tunees can absolutely get the same results through tuning. If something happens that goes beyond where we are or able to be I will for sure let you know, or you can try it on a spare CD copy, but I wouldn't at this point recommend treating your collection, it might lead to music lost. I'm going to follow this through and would love to have some join me and check my work, but for now I would say wait till we find something in the positive camp. | |

| Hi Michael
Why would freezing a CD in a home freezer then letting it thaw slowly then repeating the process change the sound? If the methacrylate is stable to a temperature significantly lower than the temperature of the freezer what does it do? Liquid nitrogen and industrial chillers are something else of course.
And if the cold does not physically modify the material, they why will the treatment be permanent?
So what happens to CDs that get transported in the non-heated aircraft holds, or left in cars in deep when the temperature drops well below 0 degrees C/32 degrees F....are they treated and sound different?
Or I need to add a dose of Intent on my part to make this work?

| Hi Sonic You should ask that on Stereophile. My job is to explore, and the cryo thing has been brought up several times and several times I have looked at it (it's good practice for my ears ). I have always noticed with the audio industry that going dry and going with higher temperatures have opened things up. This is why I personally have found it odd that people like freezing things, but It's my job to be faithful to the listening tests, and if that's where Stereophile is at, I feel somewhat responsible to respond. My answer though to the questions of transporting them or leaving them in a cold place for a time would be yes, this would change the sound. Is it permanent? Hopefully I'll find out during these tests. I know with wood it is not permanent. I'm hoping for more answers in about 4 more days. | |

| Hi Sonic
I found it interesting to read "phile" today. I did a listening test and people came out of the woodwork to say why my findings could not be accurate, or I'm out of kilter or whatever they could throw at me. None of them BTW put on that particular piece of music and told me what they were hearing, they never do. There's without a doubt two different hobbies going on here. One people listening and two people talking. I hope people stop by and read because I have a feeling there are a whole bunch of people who have not been able to find a home among the tech trekies that have over run the hobby.
I have to be honest though reading and looking at Stereophile sure builds my confidence that I have been on the right path in my life in music.

| Hi Michael
Send the link to that thread please.
Sonic be interested in what you hear in four days. I am into the Tune because there is really no "new science" being claimed unlike all this freezing stuff and oddities which Sonic thinks is delusional.
As for your call for comments on the picture of the system, apart from the arch on the left opening to another part of the building that can unbalance the sound R to L, one thing Sonic learnt is that a music system is very affected by what is in the area/surfaces/items around and behind the listener. This is as important as what is up front between and behind the speakers. Not seeing or knowing what that part of the room might be, any comment on a picture of a system like this can be easily wrong.
Its like judging a painting by looking at a detail, not the whole.

| Hi Sonic
Here's the thread http://www.stereophile.com/content/freeze-those-babies
I currently have the CD in for another freeze but it's looking like this is not going to turn out well for me to recommend. I might send one off to get it Cryoed but still thinking if I want to take the time to do that.

| Hi Michael
What's your finding with the frozen/thawed CDs? What's the signature you hear from this -- might it be a shift upwards in tone and a thinning out of harmonic richness?
