Speaker platforms ?

I've been having trouble getting my speakers ( Revel Studio 2's ) to sit solidly on the heavily carpeted floor. I've leveled them and spent countless hours fine tuning there position but have had a problem getting them to sit firmly on the floor. In the past with other speakers i've built MDF platforms filled with a sand/lead mix, these worked quite well and provided a stable base for the speakers to sit on . But with the advancements in technology and materials I'm thinking there might be a better way to handle this issue. I would prefer to purchase a purpose built platform but will build from scratch if necessary.

The next question is - should we be coupling the speakers or decoupling them from the floor?

Any advice or comments would be appreciated, including insight or product application from are host.

Coupling to the floor. The Tune is predicated on mechanical grounding of equipment in cascades down to the floor and into the earth. The tune gear as Sonic understands also takes reflections in the floor and re-radiates them thru the room by the Tuning things. So decoupling can cause the cycle to break.

Actually there really is no such thing as De-coupling. Any time there is gravity, materials (solid and liquid) and gas work off of each other. There is pitch shifting and dampening but no de-coupling. We use the term transfer a lot. That's when one thing is sharing energy with something else. For example anytime you set down any audio equipment it takes on the energy of what it is sitting on and the space it is in. The perfect case is when the vibration being produced in a component or speaker (carrying the audio signal) is in harmony with the music content and the surroundings. It's exactly like tuning instruments together. If in the same room and tuned together they will play each other and create in tune halos and harmonics (amplify). To take this a step further when your equipment and room are in this harmony the soundstage becomes crystal clear and the dynamics become as close to their live state as they can. Picture this. A big rooms energy is going into that microphone along with the vibration from the instruments. For the music to be somewhat accurate in playback the same thing in reverse should happen.

I say this a lot also (distortion). The audio community has really screwed up missusing this word to fill in blanks when they don't understand something. For example, the room is obviously a natural amplifier. Everything in physics proves this, but the audiophile has made up a myth that if you have energy in the room it is distortion. It's actually distortion if you remove the energy. Being in-tune and being dead are two different things. In tune the energy grows as it is suppose to, being dead the energy is stopped from developing naturally. This is why I design acoustical barrier systems and not absorbers. You want to control the music not make it distort.

About 150 pounds.

You have 150 pounds of speaker sitting on thick carpet? Oh my goodness. This reminds me of when I would build flooring for the Wilson's, Goldmund's and Avalon's. Yes, a platform would serve you well Tim. But not a regular one. With a high mass speaker it takes a different designing technique, and the right footprint. I'd love to do a set if you ever want to.
